During the hearing, Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill asked Chief Assistant Prosecutor Matthew Frank to use his influence to silence officials, warning them if they continued to comment on the case.

Thao’s defense attorney, Robert Paule, said he was at a disadvantage in this legal battle because of the pre-trial commotion.

`We have asked people not to talk about this case. We have made every effort to inform them of the court’s concerns and will continue to do so,` he said.

Judge Cahill set the joint trial date for the four former police officers for March 8, although he wished to separate their trials.

They did not enter a plea at the hearing.
