America’s plan to build a nearly $2,000 billion warship fleet

US President Donald Trump once pledged to build a fleet of 350 warships for the US Navy, significantly increased from the current 275 ships.

The White House on May 23 proposed a budget of $172 billion for the Department of the Navy in fiscal year 2018, which only added 8 new warships including a Ford-class aircraft carrier, two Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, and two ships.

This budget only increases by 18 billion USD compared to the Obama era, not including the annual war supplement fee for combat operations.

According to military expert David Ax, the possibility of the US Congress adjusting the naval budget proposal to approve this shipbuilding plan is very unlikely, causing all efforts to own more warships by the Navy to be postponed until

Ax believes that there are many reasons why Mr. Trump has not fulfilled his commitment to the navy as promised.

To achieve both of these goals, the US economy must grow at 3% per year.

Meanwhile, the 2011 Budget Control Act limits all government spending, only allowing the Pentagon budget to use excess budget for short periods of time.

Democrats will not allow Mr. Trump to sharply increase defense spending without increasing the budgets of other departments, something Republicans have always rejected.

The US is unlikely to own 350 warships in the next 10 years.

In recent decades, the US Navy has spent an average of $15 billion a year on new warships.

Mr. Trump’s pledge to expand the fleet has the support of current and retired naval officials from both parties, but these officials seem to have lost sight of his determination to cut taxes and control spending.

`In the long term, budgetary and political barriers will keep the US Navy’s ambition to own a fleet of 350 warships in check,` said expert Ax.
