USS Gerald R. Ford is part of Trump’s naval ambitions

US President Donald Trump has always expressed his ambition to expand the size of the US navy, including the desire to increase the number of this country’s aircraft carriers to 12.

According to the plan, the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford will be commissioned this year, 6 years later than expected, to become the 11th aircraft carrier in the US navy.

Analysis by the US Congressional Research Service (CRS) shows that to maintain such a fleet of 12 aircraft carriers, the US Navy must accelerate the current procurement rate, from 5 years/ship to 3 years/

`The new generation of electromagnetic catapult systems (EMALS) and arresting cables are still in development. It will probably take a lot of time to run sea trials and evaluate any new systems to make sure they work.

Owning 12 aircraft carriers does not just require building more new ships.

Carrier void

In January, when the US wanted to bomb the training camp of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) rebels in Libya, they had to deploy two B-2 stealth bombers from the US to fly continuously for 34 hours with 18 flights.

The reason why the US had to mobilize B-2 bombers for this conventional air strike was that the aircraft carrier USS George H.W Bush was then undergoing maintenance at Norfolk port, after having to deploy beyond the scheduled time.

A decade ago, the US Navy had a fleet of 12 aircraft carriers ready to deploy.

With only 10 aircraft carriers in service, the US Navy is forced to extend the deployment time of each ship longer than expected, causing them to wear out faster and require more maintenance time.

USS George H.W Bush is expected to undergo maintenance for 8 months, but must last up to 13 months before being deployed again.

Trump wants to fix this, but first he must convince Senator John McCain, chairman of the US Senate Armed Services Committee, who once criticized the Ford-class super aircraft carrier program as `one of the failures`.

Last year, McCain was furious over another delay in the program, claiming that more than $2.3 billion in price increases were spent on unproven technology that caused the price of the Ford-class aircraft carrier to soar to nearly $13 billion.

The USS Gerald R. Ford project has a high price tag.

`Over the next five years, the US Navy should begin transitioning from large amphibious ships to smaller aircraft carriers, to achieve the goal of deploying the first such ship by mid-2030,` Mr. McCain said.

Too high costs could be what sinks Trump’s ambition of 12 aircraft carriers.
