Decisive battle scenario between US and Chinese super warships

The Zumwalt is America’s most modern destroyer class

The US Zumwalt-class super destroyer and the Chinese Type-055 are attracting a lot of attention from the military, because they are the pinnacle of the two countries’ naval technology development.

After a lengthy and expensive development process, the destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) was commissioned into the US Navy on October 15, 2016.

China is also building an equally large Type-055 class destroyer with a displacement of 14,000 tons, expected to be commissioned in 2018. When in operation, Type-055 will be the largest and most powerful warship.

Military expert David Ax said the Type-055 will hardly have a chance to directly confront the Zumwalt class, because the missions of these two ship classes are completely different.

The Zumwalt is the first class of large US surface warships not equipped with the Aegis missile defense system in the past 30 years.

Meanwhile, the Type-055’s features are not yet clear, but there are many signs that it will play a fleet air defense role, protecting China’s domestic Type-001A aircraft carrier.

The Type-055’s superstructure can be fitted with an electronically scanned array radar (APAR) similar to the AN/SPY-1D model located in the US Navy’s Aegis air defense shield.

The obvious difference between the two ships lies in the design.

In contrast, the Zumwalt is a comprehensive stealth ship class, with the hull and superstructure sloping at an angle, the gun turret and sensor systems are also covered, minimizing radar cross-section.

In terms of weapons, the Type-055 is said to have 128 vertical launch tubes (VLS) for anti-aircraft missiles and other ammunition, 6 more tubes than the Ticonderoga-class cruiser, a class of surface ships equipped with many

USS Zumwalt only has 80 launch tubes, arranged along the ship’s hull to act as protective armor, absorbing part of the damage from enemy missiles or artillery shells.

The Zumwalt class trades the number of missiles for the ship’s durability, while the Type-055 still develops according to traditional design principles, trading survivability to maximize firepower.

Due to differences in both design and mission, the two ships are unlikely to confront each other on the battlefield.
