For the past 5 years, Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Ha (66 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) has had benign thyroid nodules (goiter).

Large face and hands, deeper voice

Recently, she went for a goiter examination at Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City.

Ms. Ha shared that she had never heard of acromegaly. She saw that her hands, facial bones, nose, and lips were all enlarged, and her voice became deep like a man’s, but she did not think there was a health problem.

Dr. Tram said that acromegaly is a rare endocrine disease, with a frequency of about 3-14/100,000 people.

Ms. Ha’s hands (left) are larger than a normal person’s hands (right) due to acromegaly.

Treatment

There are 3 methods for treating pituitary tumors that cause enlarged limbs: medical treatment (medication), surgery, and radiosurgery.

Acromegaly can happen to people of different ages.

As soon as the patient detects signs of large fingers, large hand joints, deep voice with unknown cause…, the patient should see a doctor for a health check, detection and treatment at an early stage.

According to Dr. Tram, most growth hormone excess is caused by pituitary tumors.

The patient’s name has been changed.
