Recently, the US Department of Defense announced the first images of sea trials of the large destroyer USS Zumwalt, worth up to 4.3 billion USD.

US destroyers are currently equipped with gunboats to overcome the weakness of cruise missiles on ships, which is that they can only attack distant targets, making it difficult to deal with targets at close range.

The advanced gunboat system AGS (Advanced Gun System) was developed by the American Lockkheed Martin Group in collaboration with the British firm BAE Systems.

The AGS gun has a caliber of 155 mm, and is the largest caliber gun equipped to modern warships in the world today.

When not in operation, the AGS gun barrel is collapsed inside the turret to increase the stealth capability of the destroyer USS Zumwalt.

AGS operates fully automatically, the ammunition compartment can hold 750 rounds, is water-cooled, allowing the rate of fire to be increased to 10 rounds/minute.

The image simulates two AGS turrets firing.

The AGS projectile is a long-range ground attack projectile (LRLAP) designed with tail fins and rudders to help it achieve high stability when flying to the target and allowing increased range.

The maximum range of LRLAP bullets is up to 154 km, target deflection radius (CEP) is less than 50 m.

According to experts, two Zumwalt-class destroyers with four AGS guns have the firepower support capacity equivalent to a conventional artillery battalion.

With this ability, AGS promises to help USS Zumwalt carry out pre-emptive shelling of land targets before conducting large-scale amphibious operations, or supporting landed infantry forces.

Military experts evaluate that AGS gunboats are a breakthrough solution in arming technology for warships.

At sea, due to limited horizons, warships have many difficulties in detecting targets moving on the sea surface from afar.
