The US consulate’s statement in Hong Kong `inaccurately and inappropriately commented that the People’s Republic of China’s law on protecting national security in Hong Kong would affect people’s freedom of expression.`

Criticism was made by the Hong Kong government after the US consulate in the special zone issued a statement on the morning of August 7 expressing serious concerns about the Hong Kong security law, saying that this law is `not for security purposes`.

This is the first time the US consulate in Hong Kong has issued its own stance on security laws in the special zone.

The Hong Kong government said that the US Consulate’s statement was `political manipulation and double standards`.

`It is a gross interference in China’s internal affairs and a serious violation of basic rules governing international relations,` the statement said.

Global Times newspaper earlier this week reported that US Consul General in Hong Kong Hanscom Smith met with Civic Party chairman Alan Leong Kah-kit and leader Alvin Yeung Ngok-kiu, a congressman who was last week banned from running in the election.

The US Consulate in Hong Kong called this allegation `ridiculous`.

Hong Kong’s security law criminalizes four types of national security crimes including secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign countries or external elements to endanger security.

Many countries and international organizations have expressed concern about Hong Kong’s security law, warning of the risk of weakening the `one country, two systems` principle.

On August 7, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Chief Executive Carrie Lam and 10 officials of Hong Kong and mainland China for `undermining the autonomy` of the special zone.
