The decision was announced by the Indian Ministry of Health on June 22 after a group of scientists specializing in gene sequencing said they found the new variant Delta Plus, or AY.1, spreads more easily, linked to

The new variant is related to Delta, the worrying strain that first emerged in India last year and is believed to have caused a deadly outbreak in the country in recent months.

Indian health officials said the Delta Plus variant, which first appeared in India in April, has been detected in 22 samples in three states including Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh.

The Indian Ministry of Health has advised the three states to take `immediate control measures` where the new variant appears.

Delta Plus has also been detected in nine other countries, including the US, UK, Portugal, Switzerland, Japan, Poland, Nepal, Russia and China, while the Delta variant has spread to 80 countries around the world.

Experts say nCoV mutates continuously, but most changes are not alarming.

However, leading virologists are skeptical about the decision to label Delta Plus as a variant of concern, saying there is not enough data to prove that the new variant is more infectious or can cause more severe disease than other strains.

`There is no data to suggest that this variant is of concern other than the 22 cases detected,` said Dr. Gagandeep Kang, virologist and the first Indian woman to be awarded the Fellow of the Royal Society of London award.

This means India needs more data to determine whether the variant is neutralized by antibodies produced by current vaccines or by infection with another variant.

`You need to study a few hundred people infected with this variant and find out whether they are at greater risk of severe disease than people infected with the original variant,` Dr. Kang said.

The Delta Plus variant contains an additional mutation called K417N, the same as the Beta and Gamma variants, which were first discovered in South Africa and Brazil.

Even with 166 Delta Plus samples shared on GISAID, a global sharing database, `we don’t see much reason to believe it is more dangerous than the original Delta strain,` said Dr.

`The Delta Plus variant may infect and spread a little more easily among people who have been infected with the virus or have weak or incomplete vaccine immune systems,` Kamil said.

However, Dr. Anurag Agarwal, director of the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) in New Delhi, one of India’s 28 laboratories specializing in gene sequencing, said `all strains of the Delta variant are

`We don’t have any indication yet that Delta Plus could cause any public health concern or panic. We also haven’t seen anything of concern. But we have to monitor it.`

Dr. Kamil said that the Indian government `would rather overreact now than be slow like the case of the Delta variant`.

`I’m not too worried, but I should keep an eye on this variant,` he said.
