After Mr. Kim Jong-il passed away in 2011 and Kim Jong-un took power of North Korea in his father’s place, Mr. Jang became a powerful `right-hand man` of support to his young nephew.

Jang is always present next to Kim Jong-un at major state events and is the second most powerful person in North Korea, only after his nephew.

On December 9, after vague information from South Korean intelligence, North Korea confirmed that Mr. Jang had been dismissed from his position and expelled from the party for `anti-party, anti-revolution, corruption, depravity, and abuse of power.`

The decision to dismiss Mr. Jang Song-thaek is North Korea’s highest-level personnel change since Mr. Kim Jong-un took power in December 2011.

Immediately afterward, North Korean state television published images of two uniformed guards escorting Mr. Jang right in the middle of an expanded meeting of the Workers’ Party Politburo.

His image was also removed from related articles and documentaries.

`The Great Comrade`, a documentary about Kim Jong-un, was rebroadcast on North Korean national television channel KCTV on December 7 with the images edited out.

Yesterday, North Korea confirmed that Mr. Jang had been executed, for committing `the heinous crime of plotting to overthrow the government through many despicable plots and measures, with the crazy ambition of seizing power.`

He was executed to death immediately after a special military trial on December 12, in which Jang `admitted to trying to organize a coup by gathering associates in the military forces,` the agency reported.
