In the past six years, AS Roma has faced 19 cases of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears.

To understand ACL injuries, it is necessary to know the structure of the knee.

Structure of the knee joint.

There are four types of ligaments.

Of the two cruciate ligaments, the posterior cruciate ligament is stronger than the anterior cruciate ligament.

There are three levels of ligament damage: stretch (level 1), partial rupture (level 2) and complete rupture (level 3).

Duy Manh completely broke the anterior cruciate ligament and damaged the meniscus.

Duy Manh was injured when he landed and was hit hard in the thigh by Amido Balde, leading to a dislocated knee, torn ligaments, and damaged meniscus.

Demiral (No. 28) landed on his left foot, colliding with the Roma player, leading to a dislocated knee and torn ligaments.

Scientific researchers still disagree when it comes to statistics on the causes of ACL injuries.

These two statistics are not consistent, partly because the sample space is not large enough, partly because of the difference between amateur and professional football.

Demiral was not the only ACL injury case in the match between Roma and Juventus on January 12, there was also Zaniolo.

Sudden changes of direction are one of the situations that easily lead to ACL injuries.

ACL injuries stem from knee dislocations.

Duy Manh is the sixth player in Vietnam’s U23 group in 2018 to suffer a serious ligament injury, after Pham Xuan Manh, Vu Van Thanh, Phan Van Duc, Tran Dinh Trong and Luong Xuan Truong.

Dinh Trong suffered a ruptured ACL on May 31, 2019, during Hanoi’s trip to HAGL.

ACL injury is a nightmare for players, because it can appear at any time, if unlucky.

The biggest fear with an ACL injury is the recovery process and return to play.

A study in the Dutch journal Elsevier showed a recurrence rate of 15.3% of sports players returning to play within seven months from an ACL injury.

Again, the statistics are inconsistent.

Just four months after returning to play, Fekir suffered a relapse and missed another month.

Duy Manh will take six to nine months to recover.

Players after ACL injuries are also at higher risk of lower body injury than usual.

Of the five Vietnamese players mentioned above, only Van Thanh returned to play.

The most known ACL injury in Vietnamese football probably belongs to Nguyen Tuan Anh.

Cases like Tuan Anh are not rare.
