Mr. Nguyen Doan Tu, Director General of Population and Family Planning, Ministry of Health, said that with 96.2 million people in 2019, the average annual population growth rate in the past ten years is 1.14%.

`According to the goals of Vietnam’s Population and Reproductive Health Strategy for the period 2011-2020, the population growth rate must maintain about 1% until 2020,` Mr. Tu said.

According to Mr. Tu, Vietnam has reached its golden population peak and entered a period of population aging at a rapid pace.

`It is forecasted that Vietnam will become a country with an aging population by 2038 with the proportion of people aged 60 and over reaching over 20%. By 2049, the proportion of elderly people will account for about 25% of the population, that is,

Vietnam is one of the fastest aging countries in the world.

The characteristic of population aging in Vietnam is that there are more elderly women than men, with an increase in the rate of widows and the situation of the elderly living alone.

More than 72% of the elderly live with their children and grandchildren, while the trend of Vietnamese family size is gradually shifting from traditional families to nuclear families.

The health of Vietnamese elderly people still has many limitations.

According to Mr. Tu, along with the population aging process, Vietnam is also in a golden population period when the proportion of people of working age is greater than the proportion of people of dependent age.

`The golden demographic advantage, if well utilized, is a condition to improve the lives of the elderly population in the future. Therefore, investing in health, education and stable jobs for the current generation of young people is essential.`

Vietnam has applied a fertility reduction policy, and since 2011, it has entered a period of population aging.
