The destroyer USS Zumwalt was handed over to the US Navy on May 20.

The US Navy is about to test-fire long-range precision artillery and missiles from the USS Zumwalt, a new stealth destroyer, a sign that this stealth super destroyer is ready to deploy on the ocean, according to Scout.com

The destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) is a surface warfare attack ship designed with an optimal stealth hull.

The USS Zumwalt is designed to fire Tomahawk cruise missiles and Improved Sea Sparrow missiles (ESSM) along with a variety of standard missiles such as SM-2, SM-3 and SM-6.

This ship can also fire anti-submarine torpedoes from vertical launchers (ASROC).

The Zumwalt is fitted with a Mk57 – Peripheral Vertical Launch System dispersed around the hull to ensure they do not suffer chain explosions when hit.

Thus, up to 80 weapon launchers will be mounted on the Zumwalt’s hull.

Another formidable weapon on the Zumwalt is the AGS 155 mm long-range precision gunboat, using Long Range Land Attack Projectiles (LRLAP) with a range of 102 km, not inferior to the power of cruise missiles.

The 127 mm gunboats on many US warships today only have a range of about 12.8 -16 km in visual line of sight or over the horizon.

State-of-the-art technology

USS Zumwalt uses a dual-band sonar system consisting of mid- and high-frequency sonar designed to detect both submarines and mines and incoming enemy fire.

The Zumwalt’s mine detection capabilities are important because it was developed to perform ground attack missions that require closer access to the coast than other destroyers.

The Zumwalt destroyer was built around the concept of a “total computer environment,” meaning that computers not only manage the weapons systems but also control radar, firepower, and various logistics equipment such as

USS Zumwalt can detect and destroy targets from afar.

The onboard generator system provides power with a capacity of up to 78 MW, which is considered to play a key role in operating future technologies and weapons such as laser guns and electromagnetic cannons.

A multi-function X-frequency AN/SPY-3 radar with better detection capabilities is also equipped on the Zumwalt destroyer.

USS Zumwalt was handed over to the US Navy on May 20, and the next two destroyers of the same class are being built, according to the US Navy.
